One of the most profound and touching moments of my life occurred during a recent meeting with David Turney, a Vietnam Veteran and Menominee Tribal Elder. Listening to him share parts of his life, his stories, and the struggles he endured growing up was not only eye-opening but deeply moving.
David’s life journey is a testament to resilience, wisdom, and strength. Hearing him speak about the world he grew up in — a world vastly different from the one we know today — was both humbling and educational. He shared stories of hardships and struggles, many of which would have left others feeling defeated. However, David’s perspective on these challenges is what truly made an impact on me.
Rather than seeing the struggles as setbacks, David described them as blessings in disguise, teaching him valuable life lessons that shaped him into the incredible person he is today. His ability to look at each hardship as an opportunity for growth and learning was both inspiring and transformative. It was a powerful reminder that challenges are often the steppingstones to personal growth and that every experience, whether difficult or joyful, plays a role in shaping who we are.
David’s wisdom, his deep respect for his heritage, and his reflections on his life’s journey have left a lasting impression on me. It was an honor to hear his story, and I will carry his lessons with me as I continue to move forward in both my professional and personal life.
I am also incredibly honored to announce that David will be our keynote speaker at the Vietnam Veterans Ceremony on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg. The ceremony will begin outdoors at 11:00 AM, for flag raising, followed by a transition indoors for the speaking portions of the event. His presence at this event will be a true privilege, and I know his words will leave a lasting impact on all who attend.
Listening to veterans like David, who have served and sacrificed for our country, and to elders who carry the rich traditions of their people, reminds me of the importance of remembrance, respect, and resilience. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to have met him and will continue to reflect on the profound impact of his words.
